A gaming system including a central server linked to a plurality of gaming machines. The central server includes a plurality of progressive modules. Each progressive module maintains one or more progressive awards and is associated with zero, one or more of the gaming machines in the gaming system. Upon a determination that a designated one of the progressive awards will be provided, one of the gaming machines associated with the progressive module which maintains the designated progressive award provides the designated progressive award to the player of such gaming machine.

1. A gaming system comprising:
a first gaming device including:
at least one display device;at least one input device;at least one processor; andat least one memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device and the at least one input device to:
(a) receive a primary game wager amount placed on a play of a primary game,(b) for the play of the primary game:
(i) randomly determine a primary game outcome,(ii) display the randomly determined primary game outcome,(iii) determine any primary game award associated with the randomly determined primary game outcome, and(iv) display any determined primary game award associated with the randomly determined primary game outcome,(c) receive a side wager amount placed on a progressive award, wherein said side wager amount is associated with a quantity of opportunities of winning the progressive award, and(d) for each of the quantity of opportunities of winning the progressive award associated with the side wager amount placed, randomly determine whether to cause the progressive award to be provided.
