Provided is an ignition device for an internal combustion engine of which engine startability is improved, the ignition device having a primary current detector for detecting a primary current of an ignition coil, a means for detecting, as a reference timing, the timing at which the detected value of the primary current reaches a threshold, a switch drive means for putting a current control switch, which controls the turning on and off of the primary current of the ignition coil, into a state in which the current control switch can be turned on when a power source of a microcomputer is established or when the reference timing is detected after the beginning of an engine startup operation, and a startup ignition control means for detecting a timing that can be used as an ignition period during engine startup from the waveform of the primary current when the engine starts up, and performing an ignition operation by turning the current control switch off at the detected timing. |
