Overwrite Detection for Control Blocks

Disclosed is a mechanism for detecting a storage overwrite of a computer program control block, the control block comprising one or more fields. For each field of the one or more fields, the mechanism provides an indication as to whether or not the field is intended to be updated subsequent to initialization of the control block. For each field for which the indication indicates that the field is not intended to be updated subsequent to initialization of the control block, the mechanism checks whether the field has been updated. Response to the checking indicating the field has been updated, the mechanism indicates that a storage overwrite of the computer program control block has occurred.

1. A method for detecting a storage overwrite of a computer program control block, the control block comprising one or more fields, the method comprising:
for each field of said one or more fields, providing an indication as to whether or not said field is intended to be updated subsequent to initialization of said control block; for each field for which said indication indicates that said field is not intended to be updated subsequent to initialization of said control block, checking whether said field has been updated; and responsive to said checking indicating said field has been updated, indicating that a storage overwrite of said computer program control block has occurred.
