A fuel cell electrode comprises either a binary alloy of from 5 to 95% platinum balance osmium or ruthenium. The electrode may be prepared by melting together the constituent metals of the alloy with a major proportion of silicon or aluminium and leaching out the silicon or aluminium to produce a powdered alloy. Alternatively soluble compounds of the constituent metals, e.g. chloroplatinic acid and ruthenium trichloride, may be added to a boiling solution of a reducing agent, e.g. sodium formate or suspended aluminium, to which has been added sufficient acid to maintain the pH acid. The resultant alloy precipitate or powdered alloy may be pressed on to a porous support of " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark) or an ion exchange membrane of polystyrene sulphonic acid or on a sheet of compressed aluminium silicate powder. Alternatively the alloy powder may be compacted to render it self supporting. The alloy may be disposed on activated carbon. Fuels mentioned for supply to the alloy fuel electrode include acyclic and cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons including paraffinic, olefinic, and acetylenic hydrocarbons, naphthenes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Such fuels include methane, natural gas, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, naphtha light ends C 5 -C 7 fraction, a gasoline fraction, a kerosene fraction, liquefied petroleum gas, cyclobutane, cyclopropane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, ethylene, propylene, acetylenes and benzenes. The preferred fuel is C 1 -C 20 straight chain alkane hydrocarbon. Other fuels specified are methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, carbon monoxide long chain hydrocarbons, fatty acids, fatty acid esters and sugars. The electrolyte may be sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid or sulphates, phosphates and perchlorates of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The oxygen electrode was preferably palladium or platinum on carbon. |
