An arrangement for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of mixtures of materials or chemical compounds utilizes one or more semiconductor detectors responsive to fluorescent X-rays received from the sample, connected to a single channel analyzer followed by a recording or indicating device. Fluorescent rays are excited in the sample (2) by an X-ray radionuclide source (1), and pass through a filter (4) to the detector (3). In order to be able to detect and measure for a number of different elements, a number of filters are provided, any one of which being switched into the system by means of an automatic control device (7), which also selects the channel setting of the analyzer to be used with a particular filter. Pulses of a predetermined height are counted and recorded on a printing device (6). If the analyzer has only one setting (to investigate one particular element), a plurality of detectors may be connected to it to increase the sensitivity of the apparatus. With more than one setting, the detectors are provided with respective filters, which are each preferably of the same element as that investigated, the analyzer being switched from one to the next setting for determining the elements in turn. |
