A drilling machine comprises a frame 14, 16, 18, 20 defining a drilling area D.A., Fig. 1, 2 (not shown), two clamping plates 56 for holding workpiece 66, and a tool head 104. Frame member 18 is fixed to members 14, 16, and frame member 20 is adjustable along members 14, 16 and is adapted to be clamped in its adjusted position by clamps 34, 68. Each of the clamping plates 56 is actuated to clamp the workpiece on to a plate 58 by a fluid pressure piston 45. Tool head 104 is movable along a rod 102, and a handle 110 on the head is actuated to engage any one of the projections 114a carried by a strip 112 to locate the head in the required position. Rod 102 is supported on a carriage 76 and a handle 122 on the carriage co-operates with projections 124 on a strip 120 to locate the carriage in the required position. The carriage has rollers 84, 86, 88, 90, 92, 94, which cooperate with a rail 78 and a flange 26 to guide the carriage, and a clamp 100 is provided on a vertical beam 96. Head 104 is connected to a counterweight 118 by a flexible element 116 which passes over a pulley 115. Strips 120, 112, may have recesses instead of projections, with the projections being provided on handles 110, 122, and end stops 134 are provided for the workpiece. In a modification, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), parts 214, 216, 217, 218, 220 form a rigid frame, and a further frame member 221 is adjustable along the frame and is adapted to be clamped by clamps 234, 200. Drilling head 304 is mounted on a slide 306 which is slidable on legs 245, 247, and the legs are pivotable about pivots 283, 353, to enable the ends of the workpiece to be drilled. Pivot 353 is carried on a carriage 255 slidable along frame member 214, and it is locked in the required angular position by a bolt 267, which is received in one of the openings 269 in a flange 257. The position of the work supporting plates 258 is adjustable by screws 290 and scales 400. The depth of the holes to be drilled in the end face of the workpiece is controlled by screws 330. Two or more drilling heads may be provided. |
