A multi-way valve has an inlet 3, Fig. 1, working ports 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and an exhaust port 12, the connections between which are controlled by a flat slide valve with piston extensions 7, 8 of different effective areas. The valve has a tapered through-passage 15 and upper and lower lips 16, 35 around opposite ends of the passage 15 contact the body and form bearing surfaces for the valve; the lower lip is part of a seal 34, and the upper lip is integral with the valve and surrounded by lugs of the same height as the lip. The body and valve may be of plastics material and the former includes a ceramic plate 36 of sintered aluminium oxide against which bears the lip 16; the plate may also contain silica or chromium oxides. The valve is maintained in the position shown by fluid from the passage 15 passing through a duct 19 to act on the piston extension 7. The valve is moved to the other position by operating an electromagneticallyactuated pilot valve by directing fluid from the inlet 3 to act upon the piston extension 8. The piston extensions may have the same effective areas in which case two electromagnetically-operated pilot valves are employed, one for each extension. The lip seal is loaded by springs and inlet pressure. In a modification, each outlet 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, has an adjacent connection 12, 12<SP>1</SP> leading to exhaust via an adjustable throttle 31 or a restriction. This arrangement of ports necessitates the provision of a further lip 27, Fig. 6, in addition to the lip 16, and the area enclosed by the seal 13 of the lower lip is larger than that within the lip 27.</p>
