<p>A method of making a fluid flow device comprises providing a porous substrate 2 impregnated with a light-sensitive substance in a first state wherein the substrate has a fluid flow channel 5 with a defined depth and the substance is changeable between the first state and a second state with one of states being solid, exposing a surface-area of the substrate within the channel to a beam of light to deliver energy to change the substance to the second state such that a partial barrier 9, 10, 11, 12 to fluid flow along the channel is created, and developing the substrate in solvent to leave the substance which is in the solid state and remove the substance which is in the other state. The amount of energy delivered by the beam is regulated such that the depth of penetration and thus the degree of curing of the substance and thickness of the barrier is controlled. The substance may be a photopolymer which is treated by a UV laser. The substrate may be formed of paper or nitrocellulose. The method can be used to create barriers of various shapes and sizes, and channel walls.</p> |
