Heat-dissipating stepped slider for a heat-assisted magnetic recording head

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head slider assembly includes a head slider 502, magnetic recording head and a laser module. The slider has a lower surface 502a on which the laser is mounted and an upper surface 508a which may consist of a higher thermal conductivity material, such as silicon or aluminium nitride, to act as a heat sink. The laser 504 may be mounted on a sub-mount 506 which may be partially surrounded by the heat sink. There may be a gap between the laser assembly and the heat sink or the gap may be filled with solder or solder paste. The lower surface 502a of the slider may be produced by etching the upper surface 508a. The head slider assembly may be incorporated into a head gimbal assembly itself part of a hard disk drive (HDD) comprising a magnetic recording disk and voice coil motor.
