<p>An apparatus 200 for storing energy comprises a heat store 110 , 120 for receiving a gas flow and a filter 220 223 for removing contaminants from the gas flow. The heat store further comprises a chamber housing a gas permeable heat storage structure 111 , 121 €™. The heat storage structure may comprise particulate magnetic material. The filters may comprise ceramic, metal or other material as fibres, particles or foamed material and span the whole cross-sectional area of the heat storage structure. The apparatus may operate in a charging or discharging mode. Store 120 €™ is a hot store and store 110 €™ is a cold store in a circuit. In charging, a compressor/expander 130 €™ compresses and heats the gas and a further compressor/expander 140 €™ expands and cools the gas. In discharging, compressor/expander 130 €™ expands and cools the gas and compressor/expander 140 €™ compresses and heats the gas. The filters may be gas permeable screens in the chambers, in line and separate from the chambers (fig 3) or in a bypass (fig 5) preventing particulate matter therethrough. The filters may be cyclonic separators (662, 672, fig 6) in bypass ducts (660, 670). The apparatus may be used in an electricity storage system (701, fig 7).</p> |
