Films of polymeric material, particularly polyolefins, are united by applying, at elevated temperature but below the melting point of the material, a regular but limited supply of solvent, in vapour form, sufficient only -to soften the surface of the material, to, at least one of the films, and bringing the films together. As shown, films 1, 2 of high density polythene containing 10% of polyisobutylene, are contacted between heated rollers 5, 6, after having applied to them the hot vapour of xylene dripped, from a pipe 11 controlled by a valve 12, into a trough 7 having a base 8 heated, as by steam, and radiator units 9, 10 on each side, the vapours flowing over the side of the trough and condensing on the films. The laminate emerging from the rollers 1, 2 may be further compressed between cooled rollers. The films are preferably pre-oriented by cold-stretching the directions of orientation being at 45, degrees to the machine direction as shown by the arrows 3, 4. Bonding may be effected along spaced lines or at spaced points by pre-coating -the intervening spaces, e.g. with a printing roller, on the films with a protective substance insoluble in and impervious to the solvent used. |
