Photographic images are prepared by imagewise exposing a substantially unhardened (as defined) light-sensitive silver halide-hydrophilic colloid emulsion layer containing a sulphur dioxide adduct (as defined) of a tanning developing agent, developing the image formed with an aqueous alkaline solution and contacting the developed layer with a receiving sheet in the presence of moisture to transfer a stratum of colloid from the less exposed areas of the emulsion layer to the receiving sheet to produce a visible image thereon. The sulphur dioxide adducts, which are dissolved by the aqueous alkaline solution during development, may be in the light-sensitive emulsion layer or a hydrophilic colloid layer thereunder; the adduct may be derived from catechol, catechol carbonate, toluhydroquinone, a mixture of N-methyl-p-aminophenol sulphate and hydroquinone, a mixture of 1-phenyl-4, 4-dimethyl-3-pyrazolidone and hydroquinone, chlorohydroquinone, pyragallol monocarbonate, nordihydroguairetic acid or gentisic acid. The silver halide emulsion layer may contain a silver precipitating agent (e.g. colloidal Ag and Au, silver proteinate, AgO, Co S, Zn S or Ni S) to increase the density of the transferred image. The aqueous alkaline solution may contain Na 2 CO 3 , a silver halide solvent (e.g. Na 2 S 2 O 3 , NaCNS or Na 2 SO 3 ) and a gelatine softening agent (e.g. urea, salicyclic acid, formamide, ethylene chlorohydrin or NaNO 3 ).
