Method of triggering software (eg. program running on peripheral device such as smartphone or tablet) to perform an action during media stream delivery by a media device (eg. TV), comprising: receiving a synchronisation signal conveying a reference time point during video or audio playback; measuring current elapsed time from reference instant; retrieving an action associated with time of a trigger point from computer storage; initiating the action when the elapsed time matches trigger time. The passed time may be within a waiting interval of the reference event of interest. A signal confidence value may indicate reliability of the synchronising carrier signal. The synchronisation signal may encode time and may be decoded. The synchronisation signal may be embedded in audio data and detected via a microphone. Processes activated may include skip, rewind, fast-forward, polls, votes, ratings, answers and responses to quiz questions, behind the scenes clips, replays, alternative angles. Also disclosed is syncing a peripheral device in a network including detecting a master synchronisation source and transmitting temporal information to other peripheral devices. Distance measures and device identifiers may be broadcast. Also disclosed is synchronising a peripheral device in a network, when no sync signal is available, including receiving timing data. |
