Vinyl acetate is separated from a gaseous feed mixture of vinyl acetate, ethylene, acetic acid, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water by distillation to obtain a bottoms fraction comprising acetic acid, and an overhead gaseous fraction which is cooled to condense vinyl acetate and water which is recovered. The bottoms fraction which may contain water, is rectified to yield anhydrous acetic acid, and the overhead gaseous fraction yields an upper organic layer and a lower aqueous layer. The gaseous feed is preferably introduced at an intermediate point in the distillation column. In an example a flow diagram of suitable apparatus is described.
