Proposed is a method of deriving information bits from a received phase modulated optical signal carrying FEC encoded bits. The method contains the steps of providing a predefined phase modulation constellation scheme, deriving from the predefined phase modulation constellation scheme an adapted phase modulation constellation scheme, using a set of received complex modulation symbol values, and finally deriving from a vector of received symbol values a vector of derived information bits using a soft demapping algorithm, a soft FEC decoding algorithm and a hard decision step. |
