Aqueous solutions of 35 to 65% concentration of polyvinyl alcohol are made by kneading mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol and water at 50 to 85 DEG C., softening and forming the polyvinyl alcohol into small particles and subsequently supplying the mixture to a screw-type extruder. The kneading step may be performed using a screw extruder and, after passing through the final screw extruder, the solution may be spun.
