<p>A broadband polarization scrambler comprising a birefringent retarder material layer 104 having a plurality of through-thickness zones 104a, 104b, 104c extending through the thickness of the layer, each zone configured to alter the polarization state of light passing through the layer differently than each adjacent zone whilst retaining the circular polarization of at least a portion of incoming circularly polarized light. The zones are irregular and serve to depolarise linearly polarised light in the spatial domain.</p> |
