A method for detecting a radar object using an angle-resolving radar sensor of a motor vehicle in a presence of an object that extends in a driving direction laterally next to a lane of the motor vehicle and reflects a radar wave, the method comprising: comparing a measured position distribution, which corresponds to a distribution of azimuth angles of received radar signals of the radar sensor reflected off the radar object and the object that extends in a driving direction laterally next to a lane of the motor vehicle, to a model of a position distribution; determining a position of the radar object based on a result of the comparison; and adjusting a speed of the motor vehicle based on the determined position of the radar object, wherein the model of the position distribution: (i) accounts for the presence of the object that extends in the driving direction next to the lane of the motor vehicle and (ii) is selected as a function of a distance from the radar object.
