1. A method to detect a viable bacteria cell and/or endospore in a sample, the method comprising:
contacting the sample with an agent to produce a first signal, upon the labeling of a nucleic acid from the non-viable bacterial cell and/or endospore; after contacting the sample with the agent to produce the first signal, detecting the first signal from the sample; treating the sample to render accessible nucleic acids from the viable bacterial cell and/or endospore; after the treating, contacting the sample with the agent to produce a second signal, the second signal produced upon labeling of the nucleic acids rendered accessible from the viable bacterial cell and/or endospore; after contacting the sample with the agent to produce the second signal, detecting the second signal from the sample; and subtracting the first signal from the second signal to detect the viable bacteria cells and/or endospore in the sample.
