520,687. Bed-chairs and settees. NILSSON, J. E., and FRECH, C. Sept. 29. 1938, No. 28316, [Class 52 (ii)] An article of furniture for use as a chair (or settee) or bed comprises a throw-over extension section normally constituting a seat and carrying a bedding support which aligns with a further bedding support automatically elevated into position after an initial independent swinging - over movement of the extension section. In Fig. 3 is shown a longitudinal section through one arm of the article when in chair form, and in Fig. 6 a section when extended into bed form. The extension section B is connected to the main frame A by a pair of hinge bars 15. In converting from a chair to a bed, the extension is first turned about a pivot 17 into the position shown by broken lines in Fig. 3. During this movement, links 48, 49 rotate the back 9 of the chair on to the seat 12. On further turning of the extension to bring legs 39 on to the floor abutments 66 engage the hinge bars 15 and rotate them about pivots 16. The hinge bars, during their rotation, turn triangular rocker plates 21, 24 about their pivots 22, 25, thereby causing pins 19, 27 to travel up arcuate slots 23, 29, at the same time lifting a frame 5, Fig. 6 (carrying a mattress 6), into an upper position wherein the mattress 6 aligns with and abuts against a mattress 13 carried by the extension section B. 'The pin 27 of the rocker plate 24 engages also a slotted bar 34 slidable longitudinally on the frame 5. At the end of the upward movement of the frame 5, the pin 27 moves the slotted bar 34 and tilts a bolster pad 30 into the position shown in Fig. 6. Locking bars, slidable along the hinge bars 15 by stationary cam slots 57 engage sockets 59 in the extension section when the article is converted into bed form. |
