The present invention relates to a composition to induce differentiation of white adipocytes to beige adipocytes, which comprises Butein or Butein derivative, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the same as an active ingredient, and to a method to induce the differentiation. Confirmed is an increase in gene expression of UCP-1 and PRDM4 using Butein or Butein derivative which is the active ingredient of the present invention. Thus, targeted treatments for preventing or treating obesity with fundamental approaches are expected to become available.
