A tumbler pin coding device comprises a holder 12 for maintaining an annular series of tumbler pins 10 in coded relationship according to length and in parallel and in circumferentially spaced relationship whereby the holder may be brought into juxtaposition with a corresponding series of axially extending tumbler pin receiving bores of an axial pin tumbler lock assembly and tumbler pins ejected endwise from the holder directly into such bores, the holder including an annular end wall 30 having a central opening 31 adapted to receive a pilot post of the lock assembly to align the holder and lock assembly, the wall 30 having a series of axially extending tumbler pin receiving bores 34, a lock-operating key 60 including a cylindrical body 64 having an end socket 66 adapted to receive said pilot post when the key is operatively inserted in the lock assembly, the rim region of the socket 66 being formed with a series of longitudinally extending notches 69, the depths of which vary according to a given code, the number and disposition of the notches corresponding to the number and disposition of the bores 34, and on alignment post 52 adapted to be projected through the opening 31 and into the socket 66 whereby the notches 69 are brought into register with the bores 34 to establish a series of tumbler pin receiving sockets the depths of which are a function of the depths of the associated notches and into which sockets the tumbler pins are adapted to be manually inserted endwise. In the embodiment shown the correct alignment of the key and holder is ensured by lugs thereon engaging in a longitudinal groove 50 in the post 52. The holder 12 is preferably made of transparent "Lucite" (R.T.M.) so that the depths of the notches 69 can be seen when inserting pins of different lengths into the bores 34, the pins being frictionallv retained in the bores by an elastomeric O-ring 36 which intersects the bores.
