A suction silencing chamber for hermetically sealed electric motor driven reciprocating piston compressor suitable for refrigerants is formed by a sealed crank-case 8, Fig. 1, or by a chamber 16 connected thereto by a choke tube 15. Suction gas is passed up a tube 14 to the suction valve chamber 10 and during the suction stroke of the piston 6 gas in the crank-case is slightly compressed notwithstanding a choke connection 17 between the crank-case and the interior 2 of the outer casing 1. In a modification a silencing chamber 28, Fig. 2, surrounds the crankchamber 37 which is located at the upper end of a hollow vertical drive shaft 21 up which oil is induced and which is collected in a trough 42, 43 to form a seal.
