The application proposes three methods by which devices may discover Layer 3 (L3) addresses of neighbouring devices. Firstly, a device may snoop on Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), Neighbour Discovery Protocol (NDP) or similar messages which link L2 and L3 addresses exchanged between other devices and thereby build knowledge of the L3 addresses of adjacent devices. Secondly, a device may ask a neighbouring device with a routing table to provide the information. The request may be sent directly or routed through a network management system. Thirdly, a device may ping an adjacent device with an echo request and obtain the L3 address from the echo response packet. In the embodiment an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo is used. |
