In a lift truck a load carriage 22, Fig. 3, is mounted for vertical movement along a pair of uprights 20, the movement being effected by a ram 34, Figs. 1, 2, and an endless chain 40, the latter extending round a sprocket 44 rotatably mounted on the fixed cylinder of the ram 34, round sprockets 38 rotatably mounted on the piston-rod of the ram 34, and round sprockets 114, 124 rotatably mounted on the carriage. A load support is slidably mounted for lateral movement on the carriage, the load support having a slot 104 engaged by a roller 106 which is carried by a lever arm 108 secured to the sprocket 114, the movement being effected by a short ram 48 connected by a lever arm 60 to the sprocket 44. The uprights 20 are mounted for telescopic movement relative to a pair of outer uprights 18, the construction being similar to that described in Specifications 818,457 and 818,458. The uprights are adapted to be pivotally mounted on the forward drive axle of the truck and have brackets 16 for connecting to a pair of tilt rams (not shown). The carriage 22 comprises transverse bars 64 supported by rollers 24 in the uprights 20 and having secured thereto a tubular guide 70. The load support comprises a shaft 80 slidably mounted in the guide 70 and having secured thereto plates 82 interconnected by plates 84, 86, the plate 84 being notched at 85 to adjustably receive fork tines 88. The plate 86 carries rollers 94 which engage the lower bar 64 of the carriage. The slot 104 is in a block 102 interconnecting the plates 84, 86. In operation, vertical movement of the carriage 22 is effected without rotation of the sprocket 44 and the sprockets 114, 124, and lateral movement of the load support is effected by the ram 48 rotating the sprocket 44 and thereby actuating the chain 40 to rotate the sprocket 114 independently of any lifting action. The load support is moved to either side of its position shown in Fig. 1 depending on which direction the sprocket 44 is rotated.
