The vehicle control device (5) has a preceding vehicle travel state detection means (first sensor) (52) for sensing or calculating the distance between the host vehicle and a preceding vehicle (first distance), a succeeding vehicle travel state detection means (second sensor) (51) for sensing or calculating the distance between the host vehicle and a succeeding vehicle (second distance), a driver's intentions assessment part (55) for assessing the intentions of the driver of the vehicle, and an idle stop control possibility assessment means (controller) (54) for controlling the switching on and off of mid-travel idle stops on the basis of the first distance, the second distance and the driver's intentions. |
