A nickel or cobalt catalytic hydrogen fuel electrode is prepared by immersing powdered nickel or cobalt in a solution of at least one salt of a weakly basic metal containing oxidizing anions, then in an aqueous metal hydroxide solution, and finally reducing it with hydrogen at a temperature of between 200‹ and 900‹ C. The cobalt and nickel powder may commence as a sintered plate or may be sintered and/or pressed immediately before reduction. A weak acid e.g. acetic acid may be added to the salt solution. Weakly basic metals specified are: aluminium, zinc, chromium, nickel, cobalt, titanium and zirconium. Suitable oxidizing anions are chlorate ions, persulphate ions and nitrate ions. A mixture of salts e.g. nickel nitrate and aluminium nitrate may be used to impregnate a nickel plate. The nickel and cobalt are prepared by pyrolysing their carbonyls. |
