Adenosine is prepared by culturing adenosine-producing, naturally occurring strains of microorganisms belonging to the genus Sarcina in a culture medium containing sources of carbon, nitrogen, inorganic salts and adenine. Preferred strains are those within the species Sarcina ureae and Sarcina hansenii, e.g. ATCC. Nos. 19202, 19203 and 19204. The adenosine product may be separated from unused adenine by selective elution from active charcoal.
