[Also in Divisions B3] A rotary cutter particularly for machining wood, plastics or rubber comprises a plurality of discs 10 adapted to be clamped on a drive shaft between end plates, each disc 10 having one or more peripheral recesses housing cutting elements 13 which are indexably mounted on pins 14; each cutting element has mutually perpendicular cutting edges 24, 25 the edge 24 extending along a chord of the element and the edge 25 forming a generatrix of a curved recess in the periphery of the element. Rotation of the elements 13 in use is prevented by a pin 15. The element 13 may be housed in complementary half-recesses formed in adjacent discs and the recesses may taper in depth to ensure clamping. Alternatively the recess may pass through the disc 10 and the element 13 is then identical in thickness with the disc. A series of discs 10, Fig. 5, may be mounted on a shaft 26 and clamped by nut 27 between end plates 28, the cutting elements being arranged in staggered relation around the cutter, as shown; in this form the cutter is stated to have particular application in cutting granular material from webs. |
