A sheet stacking apparatus 112 performs control to change a sheet discharge destination from a first sheet stacking tray 260 to a second sheet stacking tray 250 in a case where an obstacle 500 prevents the second sheet stacking tray from being moved down while a sheet is discharged to the first sheet stacking tray 260. Preferably, discharge continues onto the second tray 260, until the second tray 260 strikes the obstacle, at which point the apparatus 112 performs control to stop discharge to the second tray. In some embodiments an alarm is issued to a user to alert them to the situation at hand. |
