In an hydraulically operated clutch 15 having the driving plates forming a cylinder 13 and piston 14 assembly engaging with annular friction linings 45, 47 of an axially compressible driven disc 16, the rate of engagement is determined by the flow of fluid from the outer chamber 21 of the cylinder to the inner chamber 20 through a passage 48, 49 in the driven disc 16 level with the linings, a centrifugal valve 28 closing or restricting the passage when the disc 16 speed is below a predetermined speed, e.g. 300 r.p.m., and a torque responsive valve 27 closing the passage when the disc 16 tends to be overrun by its hub 17, and opening when the disc drives the hub. This gives cushioned engagements when starting the driven disc from rest, and after downshifts of a change-speed gear driven by the clutch. The centrifugal valve 28 comprises a plate 50 radially slidable in the passage 48 and urged inwardly by a leaf spring 51 to cover a port 33, centrifugal forces overcoming the spring above the predetermined speed. An alternative valve (Figs. 7-10, not shown) comprises a steel ball (60) 2À5 mm. in diameter in a cage (61) of 6 mm. internal diameter, the cage having a single port (62) at its radially inner end and two ports (63) in its domed outer end. The torque responsive valve 27 is formed by the port 33 in disc 16 and a port 34 in disc 35 having limited angular freedom relative to disc 16, the lining 47 being carried on the disc 35. Disc 16 is rigidly splined at 41 to its hub 17, while splines 42 on the disc 35 allow rotational play which is limited by rivets 36 which engage round holes 38 in disc 16 and oval holes 39 in disc 35. A third valve 26 (Fig. 2) in a separate passage in the disc comprises a spring strip 29 secured at 30 to the disc 16 and having a small hole 31 aligned with a larger hole 32 in the disc 16. This gives greater resitance to flow from chamber 21 to chamber 20 than to flow from chamber 20 to 21, so that clutch disengagement is more rapid than engagement. The driving plate 13 is secured to the turbine 11 of a hydrodynamic torque converter 10, the impeller P being driven by an engine. An input driven pump 22 supplies fluid to the torque converter and, by a selector valve 23, to cause clutch 15 engagement or disengagement. Ports 25 connect the clutch chamber 20 to the torque converter. For disengagement, pressure fluid is supplied to chamber 20 and flows from there to the torque converter, and back to a reservoir 24. For engagement, fluid supply is to the torque converter, with return flow via the chamber 20.</p>
