[Also in Divisions B6 and B8] A dispenser for tape which is cut off into predetermined lengths to form labels has a housing 2, an actuating lever 6, a lever 10 carrying a knife edge 12 which co-operates with a resiliently yielding backing 14 carried on another lever 18 connected to lever 10 by a spring 22 providing insufficient pressure for cutting, a self adhesive tape 26 carried on a roll 28 and a printing unit 40 slidable in a slot 2b of the housing 2 so that when lever 6 is operated the jaws formed by members 12, 14 move clockwise gripping the tape so that a length is drawn from the spool. Contact of a follower 18b on lever 18 with a stationary cam 24 on the housing causes lever 18 to move slightly in a counter clockwise sense and increase pressure between members 12, 14 and sever the tape. A cover tape 34 is separated from tape 26 by a deflector 36 and the tape 26 moves over a roller 50 into the nip between members 12, 14. Movement of lever 6 causes the printing roller to descend and press the tape against a backing plate 54 so that a label is printed as the tape is dispensed. The severed label can be applied to the article by means of a roller 16. |
