The method involves evaluating batches of items (20) before a sorting machine for detecting the batches of items for which the items fill sorting outlets of the machine in insufficient manner. The detected batches of items are aggregated (23) under machine utilization capacity to constitute aggregated batches of items. A sorting plan associated to the aggregated batches of items is calculated (24). Each aggregated batch of item is introduced (25) in the sorting machine, and the machine is controlled so as to sort the items according to the sorting plan.
