1,125,012. Thermal insulation. LINDE A.G. 17 May, 1966 [18 May, 1965], No. 21859/66. Heading F2X. [Also in Division F4] Heat insulating material for use in vacuum insulation, particularly of a container for a liquefied gas, comprises a packing of heatinsulating bodies each of which is of substantially cylindrical form and is made from plastically deformable non-metallic foil 1, such as a polyterephthalic acid ester having a coating 2 of metal, such as aluminium on the outer side. The coating may be applied by vaporization and the bodies are heated to a temperature such that the difference in coefficients of thermal expansion of the foil and coating causes them to curl. The bodies may have a length and periphery of about 4 mm. and have a bulk weight around 20 kgs. per cubic metre. A space containing the packing may be evacuated to a pressure of 10<SP>-4</SP> mm.
