The present invention relates to a water-based polymer system comprising at least one hydrophobically modified water soluble polymer (HWSP), said HWSP having an average molecular weight Mw below 500.000 g/mol, wherein the at least one HWSP is obtainable by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising: (a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising a hydrophobic moiety in an amount of 0.01 to 10 wt.-% relative to the monomer mixture; (b) at least one ethylenically unsaturated C3-C8 carboxylic acid monomer, in an amount of 10 to 50 wt.-%, preferably 20 to 50 wt.-% relative to the monomer mixture; and (c) at least one ethylenically unsaturated C3-C5 carboxylic acid C1-C8 alkyl ester monomer, in an amount of 40 to 89.99 wt.-%, relative to the monomer mixture, wherein the at least one ethylenically unsaturated C3-C5 carboxylic acid C1-C8 alkyl ester monomer comprises an ethylenically unsaturated C3-C5 carboxylic acid C1-C8 alkyl ester monomer, the homopolymer of which has a glass transition temperature Tg < 25°C. The invention further relates to methods for tuning the rheological properties of said polymer systems and the use of such polymer systems. |
