A method for lightening skin and/or reducing reactive oxygen species in skin in need of thereof comprising applying to said skin a cosmetic composition comprising an ester of resveratrol consisting of a mixture of 3-ferulate-5,4′-dihydroxystilbene; 4′-ferulate-3,5-dihydroxystilbene; 3,5-diferulate-4′-hydroxystilbene; 3,4′-diferulate-5-hydroxystilbene; 3,5,4′-triferulate-hydroxystilbene.
