Scintillator and semiconductor based materials incorporating radioactive materials and their method of manufacture are disclosed. The disclosed materials are integrated with energy conversion devices and structures to provide nuclear battery assemblies which exhibit increased power densities.

1. A device comprising:
a first scintillator material including a radioactive material, wherein radiation emitted from the radioactive material is converted into light emitted by the first scintillator material, wherein an exterior portion of the first scintillator material is substantially free of the radioactive material; and an energy conversion device coupled to the first scintillator material, wherein the energy conversion device converts the light to electrical power.
