Apparatus used to shake a patient so as to dislodge foreign matter from the lungs comprises a patient-supporting table mounted on a frame so that it may be reciprocated relative to the frame, means on the table to secure the patient against movement relative to the table, and means for imparting the reciprocatory movement to the table in a direction along the line of the patient, the reciprocatory movement comprising a successive retraction, an advance, and a sudden stoppage of the table in each cycle of reciprocation. As shown, the apparatus includes a main frame 11, 12, 13 on which is supported, through leaf springs 16 and uprights 15, a subsidiary frame 17 carrying the table, the subsidiary frame being reciprocated in the direction of the main frame members 11 by an electric motor 28, gearing 29, and interengaging cams 31, 32, the cams first moving the subsidiary frame slowly in one direction and then allowing it to move back quickly under the action of the springs 16. Guide rods 27 secured to stays 21, 25 on the subsidiary frame, and moving in brackets 26 on the uprights 15, limit the movement of the table and a ratchet-controlled lever 34 on the subsidiary frame is linked by rubber bands 37 to the main frame so that, by moving the lever, the restoring force imparted by the springs 16 is varied. An upholstered table (40) is attached to the subsidiary frame and carries an adjustable foot rest (42), laterally adjustable shoulder supports (43), a roll of tissue (51) for the patient's forehead, and a patient-operated on-off switch (58) and alarm switch (59). The apparatus also includes a receptacle 53 for matter ejected from the lungs, resilient feet 14, and wheels 62 and handles (63) by which the apparatus may be moved. A counter device 55 may automatically stop the reciprocatory motion of the apparatus after a certain period. |
