To provide a soft running-in surface on a wear-resistant spinning &c. ring, the ring has, at least on the surfaces on which the traveller slides, a layer at most 50Á deep of soft steel having a hardness of less than 60 on the Rockwell scale C which is intimately integrated with the 'base material of harder steel beneath it. The base material may be surfacehardened, or be hardened throughout; the softer surface may be steel of lower carbon content than the base material and be formed by deposition, spraying, annealing the surface of base material or by removing carbon from the base material. When the surface is formed by removing carbon from the base material, the ring may be subjected to a hardening- treatment which will then only affect the base. The ring may be coated with corrosion-resisting material.
