A seat reclining apparatus includes a base plate, a ratchet plate, guide grooves formed on the base plate including an internal gear, lock members installed in the guide grooves and each having an outer toothed portion, and an operating member for moving the lock members between engaged and disengaged positions in which an outer toothed portion is engaged and disengaged with the internal gear, respectively. One of the lock members constitutes a small-clearance lock member which is smaller in play in a circumferential direction relative to a guide groove than the remaining lock members when in the engaged position. The small-clearance lock member is provided at the smallest distance between an engagement central position, at which the outer toothed portion and the internal gear are centered about, and an upper end of the seatback side frame.

1. A seat reclining apparatus comprising:
a base plate which is fixed to one of a seat cushion side frame and a seatback side frame; a ratchet plate which includes an internal gear, said ratchet plate being fixed to the other of said seat cushion side frame and said seatback side frame so as to face said base plate while being rotatable relative thereto about a relative rotation axis, said internal gear is centered about said relative rotation axis; a plurality of guide grooves formed on said base plate; a plurality of lock members, each of which includes an outer toothed portion that is engageable with said internal gear, which are installed in said guide grooves and movably supported thereby; and an operating member for moving each of said lock members between an engaged position in which said outer toothed portion is engaged with said internal gear and a disengaged position in which said outer toothed portion is disengaged from said internal gear, wherein one of said lock members constitutes a small-clearance lock member which has a smaller play in a circumferential direction relative to an associated one of said guide grooves than remaining said lock members when each of said lock members is in said engaged position, wherein each of said remaining lock members has a greater in play in a circumferential direction relative to an associated one of said guide grooves than said play of said small-clearance lock member when each of said lock members is in said engaged position, and wherein said small-clearance lock member is provided at an upper position in which the distance from an engagement circumferential central-position between the outer toothed portion thereof and said internal gear to an upper end of said seatback side frame in a seating position of said seatback is the smallest compared to a distance from an engagement circumferential central-position between the outer toothed portion and said internal gear of each of said remaining lock members to said upper end of said seatback side frame.
