The core of a uranium fuel element is separted from its envelope by inserting the element into a nitric acid bath having a concentration of 7 - 12N, the uranium core forming the cathode in an electrolytic circuit, through which current is allowed to flow until the core is sufficiently loosened from the envelope (electro-dissolution of the uranium taking place at the contact surface of the two metals) and extracting the core from the envelope.</p> |
