The floating nursery consists of soil-filled 'portals' in nursery containers suspended in the water of constructed water containments or natural water bodies. Tree and brush seeds, cuttings, bare root or container root seedlings (as well as tomato seeds and seedlings) are planted into the floating planting containers then left to sub-irrigate. The plant material installed matures as container rooted seedlings or whips with little to no maintenance, and little or no additional nutrient feeding apart from that in the original soil compartment or which is also absorbed vicariously from the turbidity of irrigation source water. The floating or suspended indoor or outdoor nursery invention provides a very low cost alternative for proliferation of tree, shrub, grass, forb and horticulture varieties. It also provides a year round live storage system for trees and shrubs. Capital costs of setting up an outdoor floating nursery can be far less than 1% the cost of building an indoor nursery. Post planting maintenance is a small fraction of the cost of both conventional indoor and outdoor nurseries. The eventual product of this system is a container rooted tree or shrub seedling, sapling, or rooted cutting that is ready to field plant or tomato seedlings ready for field planting. |
