Apparatus for fibrillating an oriented plastics film comprises two superimposed layers of elastic material 9, 40, mounted so as to receive between them the film 20 to be fibrillated; means, e.g. the chain of plates 77, for moving the superimposed layers with the sandwiched film along a path; a pressure member, e.g. the chain of plates 7; means for moving the pressure member diagonally across said path in contact with the outer surface of one of said layers; means, e.g. the plates 77, for supporting the other of said layers; means, e.g. the fixed plate 44, 45, to apply pressure to said member as it moves across said path whereby the said one layer is laterally distended perpendicular to said path; and means for controlling the velocity of said member such that its velocity component in the direction of said path equals the velocity of the superimposed layers. As shown, the elastic layers comprise the endless rubber belt 9, and the rubber surfaced plates 40, 77. Two endless belts may be used instead (Fig. 1, not shown). The pressure plates 7 may carry rotatable balls or rollers 18 which bear against the elastic layer. The support for the said other layer may be itself diagonally movable across the path, and be of the same form as the pressure member. The fixed pressure plate may be replaced by rollers (Fig. 1) extending across the plates 7, and such rollers may also be used on the support side. The fixed plate may have rollers engaging bevelled edges on plates 7 to cause pressure, and keep the plates in line (see Fig. 4, not shown). In use the film is placed with its axis of orientation along the path of movement. Polyalkylenes, polyamides, polycarbonates and PVA are specified.</p> |
