A key-operated calculating machine comprises a keyboard having a plurality of banks of numerical value keys, the keys being arranged from the top bank in ascending order from left to right and continuing in ascending order in the same sequence from left to right in succeeding banks. When a key is depressed a selected one of pulses (P0-P8) passes along line (12) through gate (25) and bi-stable circuit (26). Simultaneously, switch (22) will be closed to make line (STX) positive to make circuit (26) operative and allow a positive pulse to be given off along line (C+) to gate (27) which passes to highway (28) a number of pulses corresponding to the number of the key selected. These pulses are passed to the appropriate stages of the visual register (29) under the control of the pulse (t12) from the keyboard timer (18) and when pulse (t12) is in step with pulse (T12) from the register timer (15), the number of pulses are entered into the stage (R12) of register (29). Further registers (38 and 39) are provided into which the contents of register (29) may be selectively transferred and which are used in multiplication, division, subtraction and addition operations.
