Improvements in shearing equipment

Disclosed is a shearing handpiece and a conversion kit that allows the use or a direct drive sealed electric motor that no ventilation is required for motor cooling, which provides improved reliability as the motor does not get clogged or fouled by dirt, dust, or other debris. The shearing handpiece includes a handle portion; a cutting head mounted at a first end of the handle portion; a reciprocable drive coupled to the cutting head; and a brush less outrunner electric motor mounted at a second end of the handle portion. A drive shaft extends from the electric motor through the handle portion to transmit power from the electric motor to the reciprocable drive. Two or more bearings are arranged to support the drive shaft. The first bearing supports the drive shaft at an end thereof distal from the cutting head; and second and third bearings support the drive shaft within the handle portion. The bearings are needle or ball roller bearings. The drive shaft includes a threaded portion configured to engage with a cam of the reciprocable drive. A cover extends over the electric motor. The user can adjust or vary the motor speed between 2000 and 4000 rpm. The outrunner electric motor provides torque of 1 to 2 Nm. An adapter is configured to mount the electric motor to the handle portion of a standard shearing handpiece. A direct current portable power supply is connected to the motor such as a battery pack connected directly to the handpiece or via an electrical cable. A conversion kit for motorising a shearing handpiece is also disclosed.
