摘要 <PICT:0910611/III/1> The combustion of spent oxide is carried out in a furnace at a temperature in the range 590 DEG to 800 DEG C. In operation spent oxide, e.g. iron oxide which has been used to absorb H2S and S from coal gas streams is heated in an elongated chamber preferably a rotary kiln provided with inlet means for supply of spent oxide and air or free oxygen containing gas and outlet means for removal of iron oxide product and combustion gases, e.g. oxides of sulphur. The temperature of the combustion may be controlled by the recycle of the combustion gases or preferably by regulation of the air supply to the kiln. In the figure spent oxide is introduced by means of a feed pipe 13 into an inclined cylindrical rotary kiln 1 supported on rollers 2. Box lifters 3 serve to agitate the spent oxide as it passes through the kiln up to that part of the kiln adjacent the gas outlet 4 which is connected through sealing means 5 with stationary pipe 6 which conveys combustion gases away from the plant. Suction is applied to pipe 6 to obtain a positive flow of combustion gases over the spent oxide which is discharged through orifice 7 at the lower end of the kiln into collector 9. Orifice 7 is covered by flap 8 the position which is controlled by wheel 10 engaging on rail 11 so that it is only open when orifice 7 is directly above collector 9. The iron oxide product may be reused for the catalytic removal of S or H2S from coal gases. Specification 677,614 is referred to.
