Reducing Restoration Time for Virtual Machines

Systems and techniques are described for restoring virtual machines. A described technique includes receiving location data specifying a location of a mobile device of a user. A first distance between the mobile device and a first data center that stores a virtual machine template and a snapshot associated with the user is determined. The snapshot represents a state of a virtual machine. A second distance between the mobile device and a second data center that is different from the first data center is determined. A determination is made that the mobile device of the user is closer to the second data center than the first data center. In response to determining that the mobile device is closer to the second data center than the first data center, the snapshot is transferred from the first data center to the second data center.

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
receiving location data specifying a location of a mobile device of a user; determining, using the location data, a first distance between the mobile device and a first data center that stores a virtual machine template and a snapshot associated with the user, the snapshot representing a state of a virtual machine; determining, using the location data, a second distance between the mobile device and a second data center that is different from the first data center; determining, based on the first distance and the second distance, that the mobile device of the user is closer to the second data center than the first data center; and in response to determining that the mobile device is closer to the second data center than the first data center, causing the snapshot to be transferred from the first data center to the second data center.
