521,703. Change-speed gearing. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Nov. 21, 1938, No. 33854. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] On a vehicle, particularly a motor-cycle, four constant-mesh gear-pairs yield six ratios, including one overdrive, two of the gear-pairs 19, 26 and 18, 27 constituting a two-speed gear which is under control of a double claw-clutch 21 splined on a final hollow driven sleeve 16, and is driven at any of three ratios under control of a third gear-pair, the wheels 6, 12 of which are in constant mesh and slide axially together respectively on a driving shaft 1 and a countershaft 4. The fourth gear-pair comprises a wheel 3 fast on the driving shaft 1, and a wheel 5, loose on the countershaft 4. In position I of the gearpair 6, 12, the wheel 6 is loose on the driving shaft, its splines 7 being clear of those 8 on the shaft, whilst the wheel 12 is dog-clutched at 14 to the loose wheel 5 and is also connected to the splines 11 on the countershaft 4 which latter is thus driven at its lowest speed. In position II the splines 7 of the wheel 6 engage those 8 of the driving shaft 1 and the dog-clutch 14 of the wheel 12 disengages that of the loose wheel 5, so that the countershaft is driven at a higher speed through the sliding pair 6, 12. In position III, extreme right, the wheel 6, still splined to the driving shaft 1, dog-clutches the wheel 19 at 10, whilst the splines of the wheel 12 come out of engagement with those 11 of the countershaft 4, so that the wheel 19 is directly connected to the driving shaft 1 and is driven at its highest speed. In each of these three positions of the gear-pair 6, 12, two positions of the claw-clutch 21 are possible, yielding six ratios in all. |
