In the preparation of a granular product comprising skimmed milk powder and milk-fat substitutes e.g. water-soluble forage agglomerates, skimmed milk powder M is distributed by a screw conveyer 2 between an inner conduit 4 and an outer conduit 8 through a sleeve-valve system 3. Pumps 5, 9 associated with valves 18 and 19 blow air along these conduits into a treatment chamber 6 and then down a return conduit 15 to a cooler 14 for recirculation; the humidity of the air in the two conduits is adjusted by a metering device 17. Liquid fat is atomized into the central flow through a spray nozzle 22. In operation, the milk powder introduced into the central inlet flow is partially combined or agglomerated with the fat particles while they are still sticky and as these fall under gravity to the outlets 10, they combine with the milk powder introduced through the outer conduit. The outlets are associated with two conveyer belts 11 leading to bag-filling devices 12. The apparatus is claimed in Specification 1,134,142. An example is directed to the preparation of water-soluble agglomerates from a fat mixture composed of equal parts of coconut oil, palm-kernel oil and molten beef suit containing lecithin as an emulsifier, and skimmed milk powder enriched with antibiotics, hormones and vitamins. The fat amounted to 20% by weight of the powder. 60-70% of the milk powder was introduced through the inner conduit and the remainder through the outer conduit. Air temperature of -20‹C. or 2‹C. were employed. |
