PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for cylinder skip fire so as to distribute a heat load to cylinders more uniformly.SOLUTION: Provided is a method of controlling an internal combustion engine 1 including a plurality of cylinders 2, each cylinder 2 capable of being deactivated in accordance with a pattern that can be determined in advance in response to a demanded power output, the pattern including a time sequence of fire commands and skip fire commands, and the pattern is derived by a computing pattern such that cylinders intended for skip fire in association with a fire order are arranged at intervals of odd-numbered cylinders and preferably coprime to the number of cylinders.
